High spirits at district championship

A raucous display of pom-poms and chants won Montclair Robotics the Team Spirit Award at the FIRST Mid-Atlantic District Championship, the school’s first honor in a regional robotics final since 2010. The plague and trophy capped a gripping three days of competition at the Bethlehem, PA event, where the uniform high quality of robots on the field produced a series of nail-biting matches. While the team came away with only two wins out of 12 matches, the losses were frequently by just a handful of points.

“The big picture is simple, we lost at a much higher level than we’ve even played at for a long time,” said team mentor Rich Kopelow, who has helped transform Montclair Robotics from also-rans to big-league competitors. “One of the best parts for me is seeing how much excitement there is for stepping up our game next year.”

The team spirit award also marked a transformation in the team’s commitment, fortified by teacher Angela Yanette and her cheerleading efforts.
